What Time Zone Is Wales In? GMT and BST Explained

Wales uses the same time as the rest of the United Kingdom: Greenwich Mean Time in winter and British Summer Time in summer. That means GMT, or UTC+0, during the colder months and BST, or UTC+1, after the clocks move forward in spring.

Wales does not have a separate time zone from England, Scotland or Northern Ireland. The only complication is remembering when the UK changes its clocks.

What time zone is Wales in right now?

On 3 September 2026, Wales is on British Summer Time. BST runs from the final Sunday in March until the final Sunday in October, so summer event listings and transport times are one hour ahead of GMT.

The official Welsh term recorded by TermCymru is Amser Haf Prydain. Phones and computers may instead display “London”, “Europe/London”, GMT+1 or UTC+1 while summer time is active.

When do the clocks change in Wales in 2026?

The clocks went forward by one hour at 1:00 a.m. on Sunday 29 March 2026. They go back by one hour at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday 25 October 2026.

When the clocks go forward, 1:00 a.m. becomes 2:00 a.m. When they go back, 2:00 a.m. becomes 1:00 a.m. The October change therefore repeats an hour, which matters for overnight travel, work and bookings.

Is Wales in the same time zone as London?

Yes. Cardiff, Swansea, Wrexham, Bangor and every other part of Wales use the same civil time as London. If a television programme begins at 8:00 p.m. in London, it begins at 8:00 p.m. in Wales.

The same applies to domestic train timetables and UK-wide broadcasts. You do not change your clock when crossing the border between Wales and England.

Is Wales the same time as Ireland?

Usually, yes. Ireland changes between winter and summer time on the same seasonal pattern, so Dublin and Cardiff normally show the same local time.

Travellers should still check a current timetable rather than relying on a general rule. Ferry departure and arrival times are printed in local time, and schedules can change independently of the clock.

Continental Europe is different. Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam are normally one hour ahead of Wales, while destinations farther east can be two or more hours ahead. The safest comparison is between named cities on the exact date of travel.

How far ahead is Wales from the United States?

There is no single answer because the United States has several time zones and does not always change its clocks on the same date as the UK. For much of the year, Wales is five hours ahead of New York and eight hours ahead of Los Angeles.

For short periods in March and autumn, those differences can shift by an hour. Check the date in a live time-zone converter before arranging a call, livestream or flight connection.

What time should an event in Wales show?

Use the local time printed by the organiser. During British summer, an event advertised for 7:00 p.m. in Cardiff means 19:00 BST. In winter, 7:00 p.m. means 19:00 GMT.

International visitors benefit from adding “Europe/London” to their calendar rather than typing a fixed UTC offset. A fixed UTC+1 entry will be wrong after the October clock change.

Online ticket confirmations sometimes display a second time based on the viewer’s device. Before paying, check whether the page says local venue time, your home time or UTC. Saving the organiser’s original confirmation avoids confusion later.

Will a phone change time automatically?

Most connected phones update automatically when date and time are set to use the network. Problems arise when a device is left on a fixed home time zone, has automatic time disabled or is not connected after arrival.

Check the lock-screen time against an official transport display before an early train, flight or timed attraction. An alarm normally follows the phone’s current local setting.
