October Half Term in Wales 2026: 8 Family Days Out
On this page
October half term in Wales runs from Monday 26 to Friday 30 October 2026 for maintained schools. If you are planning a family day out, the most useful confirmed options range from Halloween trains and museum nights to autumn walks that cost little or nothing.
This guide focuses on events with current 2026 information and gives each one a clear age, cost or booking cue. School dates can differ outside the maintained-school calendar, so check your own school before committing to accommodation or non-refundable tickets.

1. Halloween Nights at St Fagans
St Fagans National Museum of History lists its family Halloween Nights for 29 to 31 October 2026, from 5.30pm to 9pm. The current listing gives a price of £16, with children under two free. It is one of the clearest choices if you want a ticketed Halloween event rather than a normal daytime museum visit.
Do not confuse it with the separate late-night castle ghost tours, which have a 12+ suitability note and their own tickets. Use the museum's live event page to choose the family event and confirm availability.

2. Scream Time and half term at Margam Country Park
Margam Country Park's 2026 events guide places Scream Time in the park and castle from 16 October to 1 November. The organiser describes an interactive experience with live scare actors, so this is a stronger scare choice rather than a gentle pumpkin trail. The wider park also advertises October half-term activities from 24 October to 1 November.
Age guidance differs between the scarier and family-oriented sessions, so read the ticket description carefully. The event guide says advance tickets are limited and advises visitors to arrive prepared for the weather.
3. Ffear Fforest at Zip World Betws-y-Coed
Ffear Fforest runs from 9 October to 1 November 2026, between 7.30pm and 10.30pm. Zip World's current event page lists tickets from £38 plus a booking fee and says participants must be at least nine years old. Under-18s need an accompanying adult, while normal height, weight and medical restrictions also apply.
This is the most intense option in the guide: dark woodland, rides and live clown characters are central to the experience. It is not the best choice for a child who dislikes sudden scares, even if they meet the minimum age.
4. Steam & Scream on the Talyllyn Railway
Visit Wales lists Talyllyn Railway's Steam & Scream trains for 29 and 30 October 2026. The narrow-gauge railway begins at Tywyn Wharf, making this a good mid-Wales option for families who want the atmosphere of an evening steam train without building the whole day around a theme park.
Special-event departure times and ticket conditions can change, so follow the organiser link from the current Visit Wales listing before travelling.
5. Halloween Trains on the Bala Lake Railway
Bala Lake Railway confirms Halloween Trains on 30 and 31 October 2026. Two services are planned from Llanuwchllyn at 5.30pm and 6.45pm. The route includes a staged interruption and a return stop at a decorated Flag Halt, with staff and volunteers in costume.
The railway says online booking will open closer to the event. If this is your first choice, save the official page and check again rather than relying on an old timetable.

6. Pick a pumpkin without repeating the research
Pumpkin patches operate across north, mid and south Wales throughout October. Our dedicated pumpkin-picking guide for Wales compares current farm dates and booking rules, so use that guide instead of choosing from an undated directory.
A field visit works well when you need a shorter activity or want to combine it with another stop. Take boots, check weather updates and remember that crop availability can change even when a farm is technically open.
7. Make a Cardiff museum and castle day
For a plan with indoor options, combine National Museum Cardiff with an autumn walk around Cardiff Castle and Bute Park. The museum's main galleries are free, although special events and some activities charge separately. Its live programme should be checked for the exact day you visit.
Cardiff Castle sits a short walk away, so the day can expand or shrink with the weather. The surrounding park also gives children space to move after a quieter museum visit.

8. Set a Wales Coast Path challenge
A family walk is the most flexible low-cost option in this list. Choose a short, familiar section of the Wales Coast Path, set a simple target such as spotting five autumn colours, and keep an indoor backup for heavy rain.
Use official route information rather than following an unverified social-media shortcut. Check daylight, tides where relevant, weather and accessibility before leaving. A short route completed happily is better than forcing a long walk because it looked easy on a map.

How to choose without overplanning
- Book first: St Fagans Halloween Nights, Ffear Fforest and special trains can reach capacity.
- Match the scare level: check age guidance, but also consider whether the individual child enjoys darkness, actors and sudden noise.
- Keep one flexible day: pumpkin picking or a coast walk can move when the forecast changes.
- Check the morning of travel: confirm the event page, transport, weather and any last-minute closure.
