Winter Heating Help in Wales 2026/27: Payments and Support
On this page
Winter heating help in Wales for 2026/27 comes through several schemes, but they do different jobs. Winter Fuel Payment is mainly age-based, Warm Home Discount reduces an electricity bill for some low-income households, Cold Weather Payments respond to qualifying cold spells, and the Welsh Government's Nest scheme offers free energy advice and possible home improvements.
This guide separates those routes, explains what is automatic and shows where to check rather than asking readers to guess from old rules. Eligibility can depend on age, income, benefits, supplier, home or circumstances, so use the official checker linked for each scheme before relying on a payment.
Winter heating help in Wales for 2026/27 at a glance
| Support | What it does | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Winter Fuel Payment | Pays £100 to £300, subject to the rules and possible recovery through tax. | Your date of birth and total income. |
| Warm Home Discount | Takes £150 off an eligible electricity account or adds it to a prepayment meter. | Qualifying benefit and participating supplier. |
| Cold Weather Payment | Pays £25 after each qualifying seven-day period of very cold weather. | Qualifying benefit and local temperature trigger. |
| Nest | Provides free advice and, for eligible homes, measures such as heating repairs, insulation or low-carbon technology. | Household circumstances, tenure and the home's energy performance. |
These schemes can overlap. Receiving one does not necessarily prevent a household from qualifying for another. An eligible household might receive a payment and also ask Nest for advice about reducing future bills.

Who can get Winter Fuel Payment in 2026/27?
The official 2026/27 guidance says people born on or before 27 June 1960 could receive between £100 and £300. Most eligible people receive it automatically and should get a letter in October or November. Payments are normally made in November or December 2026.
There is an important income rule. If an individual's total income is over £35,000, HM Revenue and Customs will recover the payment. A partner's income is considered separately. The amount also depends on age, living arrangements and whether another eligible person shares the household, so the official Winter Fuel Payment guide is the safest place to check the exact result.
Some people who do not receive the payment automatically need to make a claim. The 2026/27 claim window opened on 21 September 2026. Be cautious with unexpected messages asking for bank details or passwords: the government guidance also warns about Winter Fuel Payment scams.

How the Warm Home Discount works
The Warm Home Discount is not cash paid into a bank account. For winter 2026/27, it is a £150 reduction applied to an electricity bill or prepayment meter for eligible households in England and Wales.
The scheme uses a qualifying-date test and requires an account with a participating supplier. The official page says it reopens in October 2026 and sets out the qualifying means-tested benefits. Check the current rules through the Warm Home Discount service, especially if the energy bill is in a partner's name or the household recently changed supplier.

When Cold Weather Payments are triggered
Cold Weather Payments are linked to both benefits and local temperatures. Eligible people receive £25 when the average temperature in their area is recorded or forecast at 0°C or below for seven consecutive days between 1 November 2026 and 31 March 2027.
The payment is normally automatic and goes to the same account as the qualifying benefit. A cold day by itself is not enough, and different postcode areas can trigger at different times. Use the government checker once the scheme is open rather than relying on a general weather forecast.

What Nest can offer households in Wales
The Welsh Government's Nest Warm Homes programme offers free, impartial advice about energy and water tariffs, income maximisation and home energy efficiency. Advisers can also check whether a household may qualify for free improvements.
Possible improvements include heating repairs or replacement, insulation, heat pumps and solar panels, but they are not automatic. Eligibility considers tenure, income or benefits, health circumstances and the property's Energy Performance Certificate. Owner-occupiers and private tenants can be considered under the published rules, while social tenants should speak to their landlord about the appropriate route.
People can contact Nest even when they are unsure about eligibility. The official helpline is 0808 808 2244, Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm. Calls are welcomed in Welsh.

Urgent help with gas, electricity or heating oil
Wales's Discretionary Assistance Fund can provide an Emergency Assistance Payment for essential costs such as gas, electricity or heating oil when an unexpected crisis causes extreme financial hardship. It is not designed to cover ongoing bills that a household cannot afford, and heating-oil applications use an approved-partner route. Read the current DAF conditions before applying.
If an energy account is already in arrears, contact the supplier promptly and explain what is affordable. Citizens Advice says suppliers must work towards a solution and take account of income, outgoings and personal circumstances. Its Wales energy-debt guide explains payment plans, grants and prepayment-meter help.
What to do next
Keep recent benefit letters, the energy account number, household income information and the home's EPC to hand. Each scheme asks different questions, but those documents make most checks easier. Never pay someone to submit a government benefit check and never share a password or security code in response to an unexpected message.
