If you do not currently have an NHS dentist in Wales, register your interest through the national Dental Access Portal. It is available in every Welsh health-board area for routine care. It is not an emergency service: for urgent pain, swelling, trauma or bleeding, contact your usual practice first or use the dental helpline for the area where you live or are staying.

NHS dentist in Wales: the quickest route

  • Routine care without a dentist: join the Dental Access Portal.
  • Already known to a practice: contact that practice first.
  • Urgent problem without a dentist: use your local NHS dental helpline or NHS 111 Wales.
  • Life-threatening or serious facial injury: use emergency medical services.

How do you find an NHS dentist in Wales?

The Dental Access Portal lets people across Wales request a place for routine NHS dental treatment. Local health boards use it to allocate patients to practices when places become available. You can apply for yourself or, where appropriate, for a child or another person you support.

The portal asks for contact details, date of birth and an NHS number. It also lets you record communication and accessibility needs. You can return with a one-time passcode to track or update the request and accept or reject an allocation offer.

Does joining the portal guarantee an appointment?

No. It records your request and allows the health board to offer a place when suitable NHS capacity becomes available. Waiting time varies by area and need, and the portal is not a way to jump an existing queue. Keep your telephone number, email and address current so you do not miss an offer.

If you cannot use the online service, contact your local health-board dental team. Digital Health and Care Wales publishes support details for every area. If you already attend a practice, contact it directly for routine appointments rather than making a duplicate portal request.

What does an NHS dentist cost in Wales in 2026?

Wales introduced a new set of NHS dental care packages on 1 April 2026. Older pages describing three treatment bands can therefore be out of date. The current Welsh Government charges include:

Care Current charge
New patient assessment £27.21
Recall appointment £25.00
Urgent dental care £37.50
Simple restorative package £36.03
Denture package £86.40 plus any applicable laboratory charge

Other packages cover gum care, extensive restoration, root canals, crowns and bridges. The total NHS charge is capped at £384 for a course of treatment or multiple courses delivered at the same time. Ask for a treatment plan and price before care begins, because laboratory charges can sit outside some package prices.

Who gets free NHS dental care?

Dental examinations are free in Wales for people under 25 and those aged 60 or over, but treatment following that examination can still carry a charge. Full NHS dental treatment is free for under-18s, 18-year-olds in full-time education, pregnant patients and people who have had a baby within the previous 12 months.

Certain benefits, tax-credit certificates and the NHS Low Income Scheme can also provide full or partial help. Eligibility depends on the position when treatment begins or the charge is made. Bring evidence, because an incorrect exemption claim can lead to a penalty.

What if you need an emergency dentist?

If you are already known to a dental practice, call it first. If you do not have a dentist or the practice is closed, use the NHS 111 Wales dental-helpline directory. Numbers and operating arrangements differ across Wales, so use the entry for your location rather than a number copied from another health board.

Urgent services triage patients and may offer advice, an appointment or referral. They are not normally walk-in clinics. The current urgent-care charge is £37.50 unless you qualify for free treatment.

When is a dental problem an emergency?

Severe pain that has not responded to simple pain relief, spreading or worsening facial swelling, a knocked-out tooth and uncontrolled bleeding after an extraction need prompt assessment. Significant facial or mouth injury, swelling that threatens breathing, uncontrolled bleeding or a dental infection accompanied by serious systemic illness may require an Emergency Department or 999.

Ordinary toothache should be assessed through dental services rather than by turning up at A&E. If you are unsure how urgent the problem is, NHS 111 Wales can triage it.

What about children and additional needs?

A parent or trusted person can add a child through the Dental Access Portal. Health boards may prioritise children. Community Dental Services can support some patients whose disability, medical condition, anxiety or other needs make ordinary general dental care unsuitable, but access criteria and referral routes vary by health board.

Tell the portal or dental team about communication, mobility or sensory requirements. The service is bilingual, and NHS 111 Wales can provide British Sign Language access, text relay and confidential interpretation in many languages.

A practical checklist before you apply

  1. Find your ten-digit NHS number on a prescription or hospital letter.
  2. Use an email address or phone number you check regularly.
  3. Add each family member separately where the portal allows.
  4. Record accessibility and preferred-language needs.
  5. Save the sign-in details and update the request if you move.
