When Do Schools Go Back in Wales? 2026/27 Term Dates

The 2026/27 school year in Wales officially begins on Tuesday 1 September 2026. That is the start of the autumn term for maintained schools across Wales, but it may not be your child’s first day in class. Schools can use the opening day for staff training, so families should confirm the return date directly with their school.

When do schools go back in Wales in September 2026?

The Welsh Government’s approved calendar gives Tuesday 1 September as the first day of the school year. It applies to maintained schools across all 22 local-authority areas.

However, “the term starts” and “pupils return” are not always the same thing. Schools have five INSET days during the academic year and can place some of them at the beginning of term. One school may welcome pupils on 1 September while another begins lessons on 2 or 3 September.

These are the approved dates for maintained schools. Nursery sessions, private schools, colleges and universities can follow different calendars.

The Powys exceptions

Powys follows the same September start, half-term dates and spring calendar as the rest of Wales. Its differences come at two finishing points:

• Powys schools end the autumn term on Tuesday 22 December 2026, rather than Friday 18 December.
• Powys schools end the summer term on Friday 16 July 2027, rather than Tuesday 20 July.

Those extra December school days are balanced by the earlier summer finish. Families with children in more than one authority should note the difference when arranging childcare or travel.

Why your school calendar may still look different

The national table gives term and holiday boundaries, not every day when pupils are expected on site. INSET days are selected locally for staff training, and schools can also close for elections, emergencies or exceptional circumstances.

A voluntary-aided or foundation school may publish its own calendar within the approved framework. Do not rely only on a council overview if your school has sent a newer letter, app notification or website update.

Do the dates include weekends and bank holidays?

The table shows the first and last dates of each term or holiday period. Saturdays and Sundays are not ordinary school days, while bank holidays that fall during a term are also days when schools normally close.

In 2027, Easter falls between the spring and summer terms in this calendar. The spring term ends on 19 March and the summer term begins on 5 April, so families should use those approved boundaries rather than assuming every Welsh school follows an English or UK-wide holiday graphic.

What about nurseries, colleges and universities?

The Welsh Government table covers maintained schools. A nursery attached to a school may follow the same dates but offer different session arrangements. Independent schools, further-education colleges and universities set their own calendars.

Sixth-form pupils based inside a maintained secondary school usually follow that school’s timetable, although enrolment, induction and study-leave dates can differ. Check the institution’s own calendar before booking travel or childcare.

How to check the exact first day

1. Open the school’s own calendar. Look for “INSET”, “staff training” or “pupils return”.
2. Check the latest message. A recent email or school-app notice may supersede an older PDF.
3. Confirm transport separately. School buses and taxis may not operate on staff-only days.
4. Ask about staggered starts. Reception, nursery and new secondary pupils sometimes follow different arrangements.
5. Save the council closure page. It is useful if severe weather or another emergency affects opening.

A practical back-to-school checklist

Once the date is confirmed, check uniform, shoes, lunch arrangements, medication forms, transport passes and any timetable changes. Labelled water bottles and outerwear are easier to return when the first week becomes busy.

For a calmer morning, put bags and clothes together the night before, choose a realistic bedtime, and leave extra travel time. If a child is anxious about returning, focus first on the one thing they need to do when they arrive: find their classroom, meet a named adult or join a familiar friend.
