Solar Eclipse and Perseids in Wales: 12 August 2026 Guide

On Wednesday 12 August 2026, Wales can see two very different sky events. A deep partial solar eclipse crosses the evening Sun first. Several hours later, the annual Perseid meteor shower reaches its 2026 peak under a New Moon. The eclipse is not total anywhere in Wales, so proper solar eye protection is essential from beginning to end.
Across the sample Welsh locations checked for this guide, the partial eclipse begins between 18:13 and 18:16 BST, reaches maximum between 19:10 and 19:13, and ends between 20:04 and 20:07. The Perseids need a separate night plan: meteors may be visible from about 22:00, but NASA says the shower is usually best in the hours before dawn.
One date, but two separate sky events
The solar eclipse is a single evening event caused by the Moon passing between Earth and the Sun. NASA's 2026 eclipse map puts the path of totality across Greenland, Iceland, northern Russia, the Atlantic, Spain and a small part of Portugal. Wales lies outside that path, which is why the Sun remains partly visible here at maximum eclipse.
The Perseids are different. They return annually when Earth passes through a trail of debris left by comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. Tiny particles enter the atmosphere and produce brief streaks of light. NASA lists the 2026 peak for the night of 12-13 August and notes that a New Moon should provide excellent viewing conditions across much of the world, weather permitting. The International Meteor Organization places the traditional maximum between 03:00 and 05:00 BST on 13 August.
The practical distinction is simple. For the eclipse, you are observing the bright Sun and need approved protection. For the Perseids, you are scanning a dark sky with unaided eyes and do not need a telescope. Treating the date as two short outings is easier, safer and more comfortable than trying to stay outside from early evening until dawn.
What time is the solar eclipse in Wales on 12 August 2026?
Times vary by location, so use the table as an orientation and check your town on the Time and Date Wales eclipse page. Obscuration means the approximate percentage of the Sun's visible area covered at maximum. It does not create a safe period for unprotected viewing.

All times are British Summer Time. The first visible contact can be easy to miss, while maximum is a useful shared focus for a family or group. Arrive at least 30 minutes before your local start time so nobody is assembling equipment or crossing a road while the eclipse is under way.
How to view the partial solar eclipse safely
NASA's eclipse safety guidance is unambiguous: during a partial eclipse there is no moment when it is safe to look directly at the Sun without proper protection. Safe eclipse glasses and handheld solar viewers should comply with the ISO 12312-2 international standard. Check them before use and discard any viewer that is torn, scratched or otherwise damaged.
- Use purpose-made solar viewers: choose eclipse glasses or a handheld viewer from a manufacturer on the American Astronomical Society's vetted supplier list or from an authorised reseller. A printed ISO 12312-2 claim alone does not prove that a viewer passed accredited testing.
- Supervise children: an adult should check the fit and condition of each viewer before the child looks towards the Sun.
- Keep ordinary optics out of the plan: eclipse glasses do not make it safe to look through a camera, binoculars or a telescope. Concentrated sunlight can damage the filter and the eye.
- Use projection if you have no viewer: follow NASA's box pinhole projector instructions, keep the Sun behind you and look only at the projected image. Never look through the pinhole.
- Choose a livestream if conditions are unsafe: cloud, damaged viewers or an unsuitable site are good reasons to watch an official broadcast instead.
Photography creates an extra risk because a screen can tempt you to point an unfiltered lens at the Sun. If you have not used purpose-made front-mounted solar filters before, enjoy the eclipse without trying to improvise a photograph. No picture is worth damaged eyesight or equipment.
Choose a clear horizon, not a famous pin
This is a late evening eclipse, so a clear view towards the western sky matters. Check your proposed spot in daylight. Trees, buildings and nearby hills that seem low on a map can hide a Sun that is already descending. A public park, broad promenade or other open public space can work better than a remote summit.
Do not trade visibility for personal safety. Avoid cliff edges, tidal ground, narrow road verges and private land. Confirm gates and closing times, and make sure the return route still works after dark if you plan to stay for meteors. A low-risk backup close to home is more useful than a long drive towards uncertain cloud.
Use a simple if-then plan: if the western horizon is blocked at the first site, then move to the backup chosen in advance. Do not chase breaks in the cloud while driving or stop suddenly on an unsuitable road.
When and how to watch the 2026 Perseids in Wales
The meteor shower becomes the second act after darkness. NASA says Perseids can sometimes be seen from about 22:00, but the pre-dawn hours are generally best in the Northern Hemisphere. The radiant, the point from which the streaks appear to spread, is in Perseus. You do not need to stare at that constellation. A wide view of darker sky gives you more room to notice meteors.
The 2026 New Moon removes one major source of natural sky glow, but it cannot remove Welsh cloud or local lighting. Give your eyes about 20 minutes away from bright white light, put your phone on its lowest useful brightness and look across a broad area of sky. A reclining chair or ground mat can prevent the neck strain that ends many meteor watches early.
Do not promise yourself a fixed count. Meteor rates vary with darkness, cloud, the time of night and ordinary chance. A ten-minute glance from a lit car park is not comparable with an hour under a clear rural sky, and even an excellent forecast cannot guarantee a personal total.
A practical two-stage plan for 12 August
Separating the event into stages reduces waiting and makes each safety rule easier to remember.

A family may sensibly choose only the eclipse or an early meteor session. An experienced night watcher may return after midnight. Both are complete ways to enjoy the date. The plan should fit people's sleep, mobility, transport and weather rather than turn the night into an endurance test.
What to pack and what to check again
- undamaged eclipse glasses or a safe handheld solar viewer for each observer
- a printed or saved copy of the NASA safety instructions
- water, a warm layer and waterproof clothing
- a red-light torch or a torch with a red filter for the meteor session
- a charged phone, offline directions and a clear meeting point
- a reclining chair or mat if the site permits it
On 11 August, check your exact eclipse times and the first useful local forecast. On 12 August, check cloud, site access and travel again before leaving. If the direct view is lost to cloud, the date is not wasted: an official eclipse livestream can cover the evening, while breaks in the cloud may still allow Perseids later.
