Diwrnod Santes Dwynwen is Wales’s celebration of love. It takes place on 25 January and honours Dwynwen, remembered as the Welsh patron saint of lovers.

1. Who was Santes Dwynwen?
Dwynwen is traditionally described as a daughter of Brychan Brycheiniog. The surviving legend exists in several versions, but the best-known tells of her love for a young man called Maelon Dafodrill.
When the couple could not marry, Dwynwen prayed for help. A magical drink or angelic intervention caused Maelon to become frozen, and Dwynwen was offered three wishes.
She asked for Maelon to be restored, for true lovers to receive help and for herself never to marry. She later devoted her life to God and became associated with a religious community on Ynys Llanddwyn off Anglesey.
Dwynwen’s story was transmitted and retold over centuries. Details vary, so it is best presented as a Welsh legend rather than a complete contemporary biography.
