7 Welsh Characters in Video Games You Might Recognise
On this page
Welsh representation in video games takes several forms. A character may be explicitly born in Wales, based on a real Welsh ruler, performed by a Welsh actor or simply remembered for a recognisably Welsh accent.
The distinctions matter. Not every character below is confirmed as Welsh within the fictional story, so each section explains the type of connection involved.
Confirmed Welsh origin · Welsh historical figure · Welsh performer · Welsh accent or fan interpretation
1. Arthur Morgan in Red Dead Redemption 2
Connection: fan interpretation rather than confirmed Welsh identity.
Arthur Morgan is the central playable character in Red Dead Redemption 2. His surname, family background and occasional dialogue have encouraged discussion about a possible Welsh connection.
The game does not clearly identify him as Welsh, so he is best treated as an example of player interpretation rather than definite representation.

2. Alwyn Lloyd in Red Dead Redemption
Connection: Welsh name and accent.
Alwyn Lloyd is a minor character whose name and speech mark him out as Welsh. His role is brief, but his appearance demonstrates how a strong regional identity can remain memorable even in a small part.

3. Edward Kenway in Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag
Connection: explicitly Welsh character and Welsh actor.
Edward Kenway is a pirate from Swansea, known in Welsh as Abertawe. He is voiced by Swansea-born actor Matt Ryan.
The combination of biography, performance and accent makes Kenway one of the clearest Welsh protagonists in a major international game.

4. Rhodri Mawr in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
Connection: a fictional version of a real Welsh historical ruler.
Rhodri Mawr means Rhodri the Great. The ninth-century ruler is an important figure in the history of Gwynedd and appears in the game’s reimagined early medieval Britain.
As with every historical game character, the portrayal combines documented history with narrative invention.

5. Nia in Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Connection: Welsh voice performance and accent.
Nia is voiced by Welsh actress Catrin-Mai Huw. Her accent became one of the character’s most recognisable features and helped Welsh speech reach players around the world.
The fantasy world does not make Nia literally Welsh in a geographical sense. The connection comes through performance, casting and sound.
6. Sabine in Fable III
Connection: a Welsh-sounding accent within a British fantasy setting.
Sabine leads the Dwellers in Fable III. His voice gives the character a regional quality that many Welsh players recognise, even though Albion is a fictional world rather than Wales.
This is an example of accent being used to create place, class and community within fantasy.
7. Drippy in Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
Connection: Welsh actor, Valleys-style accent and expressions.
Drippy is voiced by Welsh actor Steffan Rhodri. The lively accent and delivery make the small fairy-like companion especially memorable to Welsh players.
Like Nia, Drippy is not from real-world Wales within the story. His Welsh identity exists through the performance and the audience’s recognition of it.
Why Welsh voices matter in games
Accents communicate identity before a character explains anything about themselves. Hearing Welsh speech in a global game can make players feel recognised and can challenge the assumption that every fantasy character should sound the same.
Representation is strongest when accent, writing, casting and character background work together. Edward Kenway offers that full combination; Nia and Drippy show the power of performance even without a literal Welsh setting.
