Preseli Bluestones and Stonehenge: What the Latest Research Says

Research links many of Stonehenge’s smaller stones to geological sources in west Wales, including Craig Rhos-y-felin and Carn Goedog in the Preseli area. The evidence now favours transport by Neolithic people rather than glaciers. What it does not yet reveal is one proven route, one motive or one complete account of every stone.

A 2025 study strengthened the human-transport case by re-examining the Newall boulder, a fragment long used in the glacier debate. A separate 2024 finding changed another part of the story: Stonehenge’s central Altar Stone came from north-east Scotland and should not be described as a Preseli bluestone.

Evidence in one sentence: several Stonehenge stones have strong geological matches in Pembrokeshire, and current research supports deliberate human movement - but the exact social story and journey remain open questions.

What are the Preseli bluestones at Stonehenge?

“Bluestone” is an archaeological umbrella term, not one precise rock name. At Stonehenge it covers a varied group of non-local stones, generally smaller than the great sarsen uprights. They include different igneous and volcanic rocks. Some have been matched closely with outcrops in north Pembrokeshire.

That variety is important. The phrase “the Preseli bluestones” can sound as though a single quarry supplied a uniform set. The geological picture is more complicated: different stones point to different sources, and not every Stonehenge stone belongs in the same Welsh-origin story.

The Welsh place-name Mynydd Preseli is often rendered as the Preseli Hills. The landscape is archaeologically rich in its own right. It should not be treated merely as Stonehenge’s distant storeroom.

How were the Pembrokeshire sources identified?

Researchers compare mineral composition, microscopic textures and geochemical signatures. Over years of sampling, those methods have narrowed some sources with remarkable specificity. Rhyolitic material has been linked to Craig Rhos-y-felin, while spotted dolerite has been linked to Carn Goedog.

Archaeological work has also looked for evidence of extraction. UCL-led research reported quarry features and dates around the period when the first Stonehenge stage was built, strengthening the connection between geological source and human activity. A rock match alone says where material formed; quarry evidence helps ask when and how people engaged with it.

None of this identifies a surviving Neolithic instruction manual. It builds a chain of inference: physical stone, matching outcrop, signs of working, chronology and wider archaeological context. Strong history writing shows the links in that chain instead of jumping from a laboratory result to a cinematic journey.

What did the 2025 Newall boulder study change?

The Newall boulder was excavated at Stonehenge in 1924 and later became central to an alternative idea: perhaps glacial ice carried Welsh rock towards Salisbury Plain, where people found it locally. The Aberystwyth-led team revisited that claim using X-ray, microscopic, geochemical and surface analysis.

They concluded that the boulder was not a glacial erratic. Its characteristics matched rhyolite from Craig Rhos-y-felin, and the researchers found no supporting evidence for glaciation across Salisbury Plain or a wider scatter of comparable bluestone there. Their interpretation is that Neolithic people transported the material.

What the study does not prove: rejecting glacial delivery does not reveal the exact human route. Coastal movement, river stages and overland haulage remain subjects for evidence and debate.

The Altar Stone came from Scotland, not Preseli

Headlines about a “Welsh Stonehenge” sometimes fold the Altar Stone into the bluestone group. The 2024 mineral study makes that misleading. Researchers traced the six-tonne sandstone to the Orcadian Basin in north-east Scotland - at least 700 kilometres from Stonehenge.

The distinction does not weaken the Pembrokeshire matches. It shows that Stonehenge gathered materials with more than one distant geological history. Preseli and Scotland are separate strands in a monument assembled and rearranged over a long period.

Did the stones once stand at Waun Mawn?

One influential proposal connected Stonehenge with a possible earlier stone circle at Waun Mawn in Preseli. Later geological work challenged a key part of that case: the source suggested for Stonehenge Stone 62 did not match, and stones examined at Waun Mawn appeared to be local material from Cerrig Lladron.

That does not make Waun Mawn uninteresting, nor does it settle every question about prehistoric movement. It means the simple story - one complete Welsh circle dismantled and rebuilt at Stonehenge - has not been demonstrated. “Possible” and “proven” must remain different words.

What remains unknown about the Preseli journey?

  • the precise route or routes between west Wales and Salisbury Plain;
  • whether stones travelled in one phase or through several movements;
  • which communities organised the work and how labour was shared;
  • what each material, place and relocation meant to the people involved;
  • the complete biographies of stones later reshaped or rearranged.

Those gaps are not a reason to fill the story with certainty. They are the reason the subject remains active research. New chemical methods can sharpen provenance, while excavation can change the human context around a source.
